Operates sterilizing equipment to decontaminate, disinfect and sterilize surgical instruments, supplies and equipment. Maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment in the sterile storage area.


The Central Sterile Tech, is an experienced Sterile Processing/OR Attendant II with a minimum of one (1) year ofexperience. The Central Sterile will be accountable for maintaining the standards of quality established for thedepartment. The Central Sterile  will perform his/her duties within the Instrument Room areas that would includethe decontamination, preparation and sterile processing of surgical instruments and supplies for patient use inaccordance with Hospital and Departmental policies and procedures.


High School Diploma or Equivalent. A minimum of one (1) year of Sterile Processing, Instrument Room or CentralSterile Processing Experience. Certification and renewal of certification as a Central OR Attendant II Required.Must Read, Write and Speak English fluently. Must have computer skills with Intranet/Internet skills, WordProcessing abilities, an INSTRUMENT TRACKING SYSTEM (ie: ABACUS) and use of Groupwise or similaroffice programs.


Must be able to determine efficacy of all sterilization parameters and equipment readings toassure sterilization standards have been met.
2.Must be able to act according to departmental policies impacting on sterilization failuresand notification of the management team.
3.Must be able to inform management team of any shortfalls in the performance ofdecontamination and sterilization activities.
4.Must be able to communicate effectively with all Operating Room personnel consisting ofNurses and Physicians.
5.Must understand the importance of maintaining a safe environment.
6.Must be able to prioritize work and work requests.
7.Must be able to take direction from multiple sources and complete multiple tasks in atimely fashion.


Sterile Processing Environment of the Instrument Room. Perioperative Services. Sterilization Processes and Washer Decontamination. Potential Infectious waste contact. Mask, Eye Wear, Gloves and Full protective gown coverage required.

Must be able to stand for long periods of time and lift baskets of instruments weighing 25 – 30 lbs. Must be able to perform repetitive tasks in assembling instruments and sets. Must be able to work in an active high stress environment.



MEDIUM WORK: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
