CLINICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN

BRONX, NY, US


Under general supervision, the Cytology Clinical Laboratory Technician receives, sorts, accessions, processes, stains, cover slips and files cytology specimens according to standard operating procedures in order to deliver a timely cytology result to the clinician. Will perform other cytology lab functions as needed.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Match specimens/requisitions to verify correct patient/specimen identification
  • Determine type and priority of specimen processing according to established operating procedures to insure optimal tat, preservation and cellularity
  • Accession specimens via order entry into the lab computer system to create a tracking, reporting and charge capture mechanism
  • Label container, centrifuge tubes and slides to maintain specimen integrity throughout the processing while following proper biohazard precautions
  • Centrifuge fluid specimens to separate cells to create a mono layer slides for microscopic evaluation
  • Prepare cytospin slides for sparsely cellular specimens to maximize cell recovery
  • Prepare fluids for cell blocks for histologic evaluation of specimens, complying with the computer tracking system
  • Fix and stain slides to preserve and provide optimal microscopic evaluation. Maintain the quality of the stain and staining line with appropriate record keeping providing optimal microscopic evaluation. Evaluate stains and brings problems to attention of supervisor
  • Coverslip slides to prevent specimen loss and facilitate microscopy
  • Print computer labels and adheres them to FNA and brushing slides for permanent identification and retrieval
  • Clean and decontaminate equipment and work areas on a daily basis according to standard operating procedures
  • Prepare solutions and maintain adequate levels of supplies, chemicals and equipment needed to process specimens.
  • May file slides for follow-up and retrieval purposes as mandated by regulatory agencies
  • Adhere to hospital and departmental guidelines with regards to fire, safety, blood-borne pathogens and chemical hygiene plan to protect from undo exposure to biohazards
  • Prepare "liquid pap" specimens, ensuring optimal cell recovery and preservation. Work area must be maintained and well stocked at all times

 

Qualifications:

  • Must have a current New York State Clinical Lab Technician's License
  • Maintain up-to-date registration, supplying supervisor with a current copy
  • Associate’s Degree required - High School diploma will be accepted if the person has been grandfathered by New York State and he/she currently holds a Clinical Lab Technician's License Otherwise, an AAS degree is required along with a current New York State Clinical Lab Technician's License
  • The ability to accession and process specimens while maintaining specimen integrity required
  • Basic computer skills are required. Medical terminology courses, prior lab experience is helpful
  • Familiar with IEC  GP8 centrifuge, Rotina 380 centrifuge, Shandon Cytospin centrifuge, Biosafety hood, Coverslipping fume hoods, Automatic pipettes, Repipet volume dispensers, Konica-Minolta copier, Tripath Imager Multi Vial Vortexer, PrepMate tm Processor, PrepMate Stain Processor, Blender, Thermo Multi Block heater, Microwave for data entry
