The Public Relations Manager helps enhance and protect the reputation of Montefiore Health System. This includes highlighting key clinical, wellness, health and research programs, as well as other newsworthy activities which support the mission of the organization.


The PR Manager writes clearly, concisely and quickly about a broad range of healthcare topics for both consumer and trade audiences. The ideal candidate is confident in distilling complex science into pitches to reporters, and regularly contacting traditional media about healthcare news.


The position relies heavily on both creating and managing relationships internally, and externally with the media. The candidate will be working with a range of colleagues, from senior leadership to frontline clinical staff to marketing and development teams. Interaction with patients and the sensitivities required for this are essential. Being a strategic thinking, and delivering clear, consistent communications counsel is a key component of this role.


Responsibilities and Skills:

  • Translate and communicate science, clinical and educational news through writing of a variety of communications platforms like press releases, talking points, Q&A response documents, fact sheets/infographics
  • Regularly explore opportunities to drive news for Montefiore Health System in byline articles, Op-Eds, feature pitches
  • Manage news media inquiries, reactive and proactive, including time-sensitive inquiries, video/film shoots, 1:1 expert interviews, and news conferences and events
  • Initiate regular meetings with department leads and other suggested points of contact
  • Build and maintain relationships with Montefiore healthcare experts; prepare spokespeople for interviews
  • Work/collaborate with other health system communications departments, including, but not limited to marketing, development and government/community relations and PR communications planning and regular pitching of newsworthy content
  • Maintain and update department media contact lists, Montefiore staff listings and other shared PR department resources
  • Engage with outside PR consultants including agencies, photographers, and designers
  • Rotate in the PR department’s on-call schedule, should urgent matters come up on evenings and weekends


  • Deep understanding of what makes a compelling news story and how to find it
  • Creative thinking and knowledge of how to best pitch story ideas that benefit reporters and audiences
  • Clean, clear, concise writing skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and on deadline
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated sense of judgment
  • Organized, detail-oriented team player with a positive attitude
  • Knowledge of and interest in healthcare
  • Ability to navigate large organization
  • Working experience in a hospital communications office, corporate or agency environment for a minimum of 5 years
  • Proficiency in use of all Microsoft Office products

This is a full-time, position which reports to the Senior Director, Public Relations. 


Writing test required

Bachelor’s degree obtained through an accredited institution.
