NURSE PRACTITIONER

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Anesthesia Preoperative Evaluation Nurse Practitioner will review medical records and interview patients, assessing their history and current clinical status, in order to ensure patients are optimized for surgery. This will require collaboration with surgeons, surgical coordinators, anesthesiologists, and other medical providers to communicate recommendations and prevent surgical delays or cancellations.

Position Responsibilities/Job Duties:

• Conduct a thorough review of the electronic medical record to assess medical and surgical history, test results, medications, and perioperative recommendations from other medical providers.

Interview patients, primarily via televisit, but at times in person, to clarify medical history and assess current clinical status. This may include speaking with family members. skilled nursing home staff, or other medical providers as needed to gather the necessary information.

• Counsel patients regarding perioperative medication instructions, NPO guidance, and what to expect for anesthesia the day of surgery.
• Document the preoperative evaluation including all pertinent details in the electronic medical record.
• Communicate via phone and/or email with surgeons, surgical coordinators, primary care providers, and subspecialists regarding any additional optimization or evaluation needed prior to surgery.
• Notify the Anesthesiology team in advance of any special patient considerations that may alter their anesthetic plan (i.e. previous anesthesia reactions/complications, difficult airway, MH precautions, hemostasis recommendations from hematology providers etc.)

• Participate in scholarly activities including research and quality improvement to continuously improve our preoperative evaluation process. Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs, and seeking appropriate educational offerings.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, & WORK EXPERIENCE: 

• NYS RN and NP licenses

• Masters or Doctorate in Nursing

• BLS, ACLS

• Experience as a Nurse Practitioner in either Anesthesia or Internal Medicine/Medicine Subspecialty

• Adult Patient age/population experience 

• Preferred NP experience in conducting pre operative anesthesia assessments.
