Position Summary

Reporting to the Administrative Director of Quality, Patient Safety, the Patient Safety Specialist promotes safe care of all OBGYN in-patient including mothers and babies by keeping patient safety as a focus of all unit operations and clinical practices, which will promote quality and minimize risk of patient harm and it is anticipated that this will promote a decrease in preventable adverse outcomes and professional liability claim losses.  The goal is advance/proactive performance improvement for the Medical Center by identifying patient safety projects, day-to-day onsite support for all program components, and ongoing monitoring and measurement of the impact of such projects on patient safety and professional liability claims.  The position will promote interdisciplinary teamwork, initiatives, and projects for patient safety.  Promote standardization of key clinical policies and protocols based on current science, standards, and guidelines from professional associations (ACOG, etc.) and regulatory agencies (TJC, NYSDOH, etc.) Interface with clinicians, senior leadership, and support associates to foster the team approach to the delivery of safe patient care.  The individual will also assist in the development and management of an interdisciplinary patient safety program / obstetrical simulation program being developed for all labor and delivery staff (physicians, nurses, midwives, and physicians assistants).  This simulation training will include a focus on TeamSTEPPS and provide oversight and evaluation of all staff receiving and participating in simulation educational activities.

Additionally, individual will assist in data abstraction for quality and performance improvement initiatives related to the ASOB/GYN information system.


  • Must be a licensed Health Care Professional with three - five years' women's health experience.
  • Demonstrates computer software talent and / or equivalent life experience required. 
  • Associate Degree required. Graduate training / degree preferred.  Master's Degree preferred
  • BLS certification; Infection control certification required. 
  • 3-5 years of experience in obstetrics, gynecology, and women's health; maternal-fetal medicine practice and research skills
  • 2-3 years' experience working with complex systems issues such as case management or utilization review is preferred
  • Experience with structured medical record abstraction is required. 
  • Quality improvement and patient safety knowledge preferred. 
  • Experience in working with regulatory agencies; knowledge of regulatory and operational guidelines that govern the relevant clinical areas
  • Effective English communication skills, both written, verbal, and interpersonal skills; ability to use basic computerized data entry.
  • MMC Clinical Information Systems; ability to learn AS/OBGYN computerized prenatal record keeping system.
