Over the past forty years, Montefiore's Division of Substance Abuse has helped thousands of men and women enter recovery and re-join their families and communities. Through recovery, individuals are empowered to help find meaning in their lives and integrate back into their communities. The Vocational Counselor will assist in the implementation of vocational project services and to identify assess and provide services to assist substance abusing patients in making appropriate educational and vocational choices toward their established goals.



  • Perform an initial vocational interview and functional assessments to obtain vocational/educational background information and identify preliminary needs of patient
  • Develop vocational rehabilitation plan with long and short term goals
  • Provide on-going individual and group counseling to help patients make appropriate vocational decisions and assist them toward their established goals
  • Assist with applications for jobs, training programs, educational programs, etc for patients
  • Assists in the coordination and evaluation of vocational services and maintaining databases with relevant project information to ensure compliance with funding agency’s expectation
  • Participates in Interdisciplinary Case Conferences to discuss pertinent  vocational treatment plans and progress



  • Master’s degree preferred, Bachelor’s Degree required in Vocational Rehabilitation, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work or otherwise related field
  • Candidates with Bachelor’s Degrees must have a CASAC. 
  • Candidates with Master’s Degrees must have one of the following:

1) CRC 



4) LMSW (or MSW with limited permit)

5) LMHC (or Mental Health Counselor with limited permit)

6) LMFT (or Marriage and Family Therapist with limited permit)  

  • A minimum of 1 year of relevant work experience in the career counseling and drug addiction, social service or health care field. 
  • Professional experience in the following areas preferred: vocational planning, facilitating vocational groups, counseling, interpreting standardized tests and soliciting employment opportunities
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) required
  • Knowledge of governmental, private and community programs and entitlements available to patients
  • Familiarity with various OASAS and TJC regulations and standards
  • Knowledge of computer software and ability to document all services in an Electronic Health Record
  • Experience recognizing signs of neglect or abuse of children, adults or elderly.    


This is a 100% grant funded position.
