Position Description:

Our elite Center for Health Data Innovations (CHDI) team, part of Montefiore Health System and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, has been recognized nationally for improving the quality, delivery, and efficiency of patient care not just across the Montefiore enterprise, but among a consortium of 11 academic medical centers across the United States. Through Montefiore’s multidisciplinary approach, we can provide access to a wide variety of medical specialties for a full range of clinical services, ensuring seamless, coordinated care for our patients.

We are seeking a Software Engineer to join the CHDI team which is currently creating an analytics platform to support our clinicians across the health system. This platform will directly inform critical decisions about patient care using bio surveillance systems, early recognition and alerting systems, and machine learning techniques. The team is developing and implementing high-quality big-data analytics infrastructure integrated with our EMR (Epic) and other delivery of care processes and operational systems. The team’s objective is to improve quality of care while lowering cost of care, and enhance patient outcomes, patient safety, satisfaction, and experience within Montefiore.

The Software Engineer will work within Montefiore IT's Epic Interface and Systems Infrastructure teams to ensure data pipelines are built and maintained appropriately. This individual will play a key role in design, development, implementation and maintenance of HL7 v2 & v3 interfaces, web services, FHIR and APIs to support development and integration of expert clinical and analysis systems with Montefiore EPIC systems.

This is a  joint position with CHDI and Epic Bridges/Interface teams.


  • Perform system and problem analysis to develop solutions for new systems requirements or enhancements to existing systems.
  • Produce and maintain documentation such as systems requirements, designs, resource inventories and plans as requested.
  • Work with Business Systems Analysts, colleagues from various application/technical teams, and end users to gather required information and specifications for applications and projects
  • Substantial client interface
  • Document integration workflow
  • Creation and execution of test plans
  • Interface troubleshooting and problem resolution

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, and/or systems administration or equivalent work experience
  • Experience working with enterprise EHR systems (preferably Epic)
  • Epic Bridges certification preferred
  • More than 3 years of experience in building and maintaining HL7 interfaces preferred
  • Software development experience, either with an integration engine such as Ensemble or Cloverleaf, or .NET or Java, JavaScript, XML, web services
  • Prior experience with interface/integration projects
  • Application/System implementation, troubleshooting, testing, and support experience.
  • Experience with FHIR preferred
  • Experience writing complex SQL queries
  • Enterprise level patient and clinical data models
  • Meeting all requirements for EPIC certification is a condition of employment
