SURGICAL PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT

Joining our dynamic Neuro Interventional Radiology team, this Surgical Physician Assistant will support complex neurovascular procedures such as CT guided injections and many more. Key responsibilities include providing first-assist surgical support, conducting pre- and post-procedure care, managing inpatient/outpatient coordination, and responding to neurovascular emergencies. The PA will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, assist in diagnostic imaging review and contribute to quality improvement and research initiatives.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist in Neuro Interventional Procedures: Provide direct surgical support during neuro interventional radiology procedures, including thrombectomies, aneurysm coiling, and embolizations.

Pre- and Post-Procedure Patient Care: Conduct pre-procedure evaluations, obtain patient histories, and perform physical exams to ensure readiness for interventional procedures. Monitor patients post-procedure, manage recovery, and provide discharge instructions.

Perform and Interpret Diagnostic Imaging: Assist in reviewing neuroimaging studies (CT, MRI, angiography) and correlate findings with clinical presentations.

First-Assist in Surgical Settings: Provide hands-on assistance during complex neurovascular interventions, ensuring optimal patient safety and procedural efficiency.

Manage Inpatient and Outpatient Care: Round on hospitalized patients, update treatment plans, and coordinate care with neurology, neurosurgery, and ICU teams. Conduct outpatient follow-ups and coordinate long-term care plans.

Emergency Response & On-Call Support: Respond to stroke alerts and other neurovascular emergencies, assisting in rapid assessment and intervention. Participate in a rotating on-call schedule to provide 24/7 patient care support.

Collaboration & Multidisciplinary Coordination: Work closely with interventional radiologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, and critical care teams to ensure comprehensive patient management. 

Patient & Family Education: Communicate procedure risks, benefits, and expected outcomes to patients and families, ensuring informed consent and understanding.

Documentation & Compliance: Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR), ensuring compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.

Quality Improvement & Research Participation: Engage in quality improvement initiatives, research projects, and clinical trials related to neurovascular interventions.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's Degree

Graduate of an approved PA program.

Licensed and registered Physician Assistant in New York State. NCCPA certified.

Previous experience in NIR, neurology, neurosurgery, or interventional radiology preferred.

Strong clinical, procedural, communication, and teamwork skills.

Knowledge of EKG, Xray interpretation, Xray/CT/MRI protocols; pharmacology-including ability to adjust doses.

Knowledge of the physiological difference in different age groups.

Knowledge of Computer and standard office equipment, Contrast Injector equipment,  Patient Monitoring equipment, Defibrillator, EKG Machine, Sono Site Rite-Venous Localization, PACS/Centricity, EMR
