ASSISTANT DIRECTOR ANATOMIC PATHOLOGY

BRONX, NY, US


This position oversees the clinical operations of the Anatomic Pathology (AP) Division at MMC hospitals and outpatient sites.   This position directs laboratory managers, supervisors, and a large diverse support staff within the division.  Under the direction of the Vice Chair, the assistant director works with managers, supervisors, Pathologist's Assistants and Anatomic Pathology faculty to meet service goals; maintain and improve workflow efficiency and productivity; ensure associate and customer satisfaction, and ensure compliance with regulatory agencies (TJC, CAP, DOH, OSHA).  This position oversees staff recruiting and training, holds staff accountable for performance of their job and addresses labor relations and 1199 matters.

This position also holds a leadership role on the departmental Quality Management Team to align quality initiatives with Pathology operations.   In this capacity, the position designs and implements the quality assurance program for the Anatomic Pathology Division, including monitoring of workflow, specimen integrity and turnaround time to achieve the highest level of physician and patient satisfaction.  

Responsibilities:
•    Direct the daily operations of the Anatomic Pathology (AP) Laboratories at all Montefiore Medical Center sites, in support of the Vice Chair of Anatomic Pathology.  Resolve issues in AP workflow, personnel, and equipment.  Interact with other sections in the pathology department on issues of mutual interest. Initiate AP service projects and oversee project managers
•    Plan and monitor budgets, purchasing, contracts and resource allocations with AP service medical directors, managers, and departmental senior leadership.   Perform financial maintenance (e.g., charge code updates)
•    Oversee AP regulatory compliance and quality assurance/improvement programs in coordination with departmental regulatory staff.  Includes data collection, facilities management, responses to AP QA issues, alignment of policies with actual practices and uniformity of practices at all campuses.  Lead AP participation in new departmental QM initiatives
•    Direct human resource management activities with assistance as needed from AP managers:  recruiting of qualified personnel, performance issues, address union matters. Maintain personnel folders and ensure competency testing and evaluations are performed and reported timely.  Develop and revise job descriptions
•    Assist the Anatomic Pathology Vice-Chair and Anatomic Pathology Service Medical Directors with departmental initiatives
•    Lead department-wide performance improvement initiatives.  Perform root cause and create standardized interventions
•    Interface with non-clinical departments including Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Employee Health, and others for addressing the needs of the department and compliance with MMC and regulatory policies
•    Interface with other clinical departments, including outreach clients, to improve customer and associate satisfaction in accordance with Montefiore Excellence expectations. Working with Pathology Customer Service, address complaints from physicians, nurses, patients, clients, and others

 

Qualifications:
•    Master's Degree laboratory medicine, healthcare required, business administration preferred
•    10 years’ work experience 
•    Familiarity with anatomic pathology laboratory management, processes, workflow, and equipment

 

This position is located at the Moses campus in the Surgical Pathology lab. The standard hours are 9:00am – 5:30pm.
