INTRODUCTION: The Montefiore Einstein Division of Hepatology was founded in 2007 under the leadership of Allan W. Wolkoff, M.D. with the aim of developing a clinical liver program charged with establishing a new multidisciplinary liver transplantation group that would synergize with the activities of the Marion Bessin Liver Research Center. This has resulted in development of a highly regarded outstanding Comprehensive Liver Program that includes specialists in hepatology, oncology, surgery, radiology, psychiatry, pediatric gastroenterology, and family medicine. Cutting-edge treatments for liver disease are available to patients, including advanced clinical trials, novel therapeutic approaches to complex problems, and liver transplantation. This clinical program works closely with the Marion Bessin Liver Research Center to bridge new basic research findings to translational advances in the study and treatment of human liver diseases. Select members of the Comprehensive Liver Program with a history of external funding are full members of the Liver Research Center, enhancing opportunities to develop new collaborations and translational research projects that have a state-of-the-art basic science component. CLINICAL ACTVITIES:  The goals of the Montefiore Einstein Division of Hepatology encompass and bridge important areas of science and medicine with the goal of providing new insights and therapeutic options for our many patients with liver disease as well as training the next generation of clinicians and researchers. The Division of Hepatology provides state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment of liver diseases and bridges basic and clinical research efforts. Its activities are integrated with those of the Liver Research Center and it has a close and ongoing relationship with the Division of Transplantation in the Department of Surgery as well as the Division of GI and Liver Pathology in the Department of Pathology.

At the Division of Hepatology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center, we know that liver disease can have a dramatic impact on a person’s life. For patients with early-stage liver disease, their condition may be managed with medications, counseling, and monitoring. Those who progress to advanced liver disease or liver cancer require advanced liver care and potentially a liver transplant. We offer complete, state-of-the-art care for all types of liver problems, including liver cancer, are dedicated developing innovative treatments, and committed to supporting our patients and their families. We work closely with a group of specialists who treat patients with liver and bile duct diseases or liver cancer, including surgeons who perform liver/bile duct surgeries or liver transplants at Montefiore. We also provide specialized service to our hospitalized patients at Montefiore who suffer severe acute or chronic liver conditions. Our experienced liver specialists provide a full range of treatments, including medications, interventional therapies, and minimally invasive surgeries that are not widely available elsewhere. We are also national leaders in liver transplantation, including living donor liver transplant, with one of the best transplant center outcomes in the nation.

RESEARCH: Our outlook is multidisciplinary, as the liver has important roles in many aspects of human health. Projects in collaboration with other divisions (e.g., endocrinology) and departments (e.g., Department of Developmental and Molecular Biology) have been in place for many years and are strongly encouraged. We have worked with the Division of Abdominal Transplantation in the Department of Surgery to establish a robust liver transplantation program with patient outcomes that are among the best in the world. Our cadre of academic hepatology clinicians is truly outstanding and they are clearly dedicated to advancing the field. Recent recruitment of outstanding basic investigators has further expanded the academic breadth of the division and has enhanced our portfolio of disease-oriented translational research, providing fundamental insights into pathobiology and potential new approaches to the prevention and treatment of liver disease.

TRAINING:  The Division is responsible for medical student, resident and fellowship training in Hepatology. Division faculty teach in the medical school curriculum and provide teaching and supervision for students, resident and fellows in our hospitals and ambulatory clinics. We offer several options for post-graduate training in advanced hepatology care: (1) ACGME-accredited Transplant Hepatology Fellowship; (2) ACGME-accredited Combined Gastroenterology & Transplant Hepatology Fellowship; (3) Non-ACGME-accredited Hepatology Fellowship. The ACGME-accredited Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program is an intensive one-year program of advanced clinical training, open to physicians who have completed an ACGME-accredited gastroenterology fellowship. Upon completion of training, fellows are eligible for advanced UNOS certification in liver transplantation and ABIM board certification in transplant hepatology. The ACGME-accredited Combined Gastroenterology & Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program is available for current Montefiore Einstein Gastroenterology fellows who are interested in pursuing a career in transplant hepatology. This pathway allows for an accelerated three-year program, that incorporates intensive transplant hepatology training during their fellowship period. Fellows interested in participating are selected during their first year of gastroenterology fellowship. Graduates of the combined program are board-eligible for both the ABIM Gastroenterology & Transplant Hepatology board exams. The non-ACGME accredited Hepatology Fellowship Program allows individuals who have completed an ACGME-accredited internal medicine residency to learn general and transplant hepatology in a one-year program. This year involves rotations on the inpatient transplant hepatology service, the hepatology consult service, and hepatology outpatient clinic.

 

 

 

POSITION PROFILE

 

Montefiore Medical Center & Albert Einstein College of Medicine seek a physician with unique vision, enthusiasm, and experience to serve as Chief of the Division of Hepatology. The ideal candidate is an academic physician with expertise in applying new knowledge to the practice of clinical medicine and a track record of scholarship and leadership. The Division Chief should be a nationally respected academic Hepatologist with demonstrated clinical, administrative, and research accomplishments. The next Division Chief will be the leader of a large academic and clinical enterprise. Candidates must possess the qualities required to be a successful leader in a complex multidisciplinary environment, including working collaboratively across various organizations and effectively promoting the Division with community providers and leaders, donors, and hospital executives. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Candidates for the position of Chief, Division of Hepatology will be selected from a pool reflecting broadly defined diversity and will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • A history of academic leadership and reputation as evidenced by a history of significant external funding (e.g. NIH), participation in invited symposia and lectures, membership in advisory panels, and editorial responsibilities.
  • Administrative and leadership experience to ensure the continued excellence and enhancement of the clinical, research, and educational missions of the Division.
  • Enthusiastic development of junior faculty and the successful recruitment of faculty and staff at all levels of seniority.
  • Financial and business acumen, with appropriate knowledge of the complex financial pressures facing academic medical centers and health care delivery organizations.
  • An M.D. degree and Board Certification in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and either licensed or eligible for medical licensure in New York.

In addition to a competitive salary of $350,000-400,000, we offer bonuses and productivity incentives, LTD, STD, paid malpractice, health, dental, vision and a 403(b) are also offered.
