CHILD LIFE SPECIALIST

Child Life Specialist I provides cost-effective delivery of high-quality child life services to our patients. This involves performing thorough patient developmental assessments; creating and implementing individualized treatment plans for developmentally appropriate preparation and support throughout hospitalization; serving as a resource and liaison for patients and their family members and the interdisciplinary team; precepting playroom assistants, students, and volunteers; maintaining playroom activities and supplies; and participating in quality/performance improvement initiatives.     

 

The Child Life Specialist needs to multi-task to achieve all goals including patient and family healthcare education/support, operation of play spaces, management of supplies, awareness of funding, interdisciplinary team approach, supervising and/or precepting students and volunteers, duties include collaboration on all aspects of programming.

1. Assess needs of patient and families

2. Develop plan of care with IDT

3. Provide preparations and procedural support interventions for patients

4. Provide family support

5. Facilitate outlets for expression and coping i.e. medical play, music, art, etc.

6. Provide non-pharmacological pain management i.e. guided imagery, reiki, therapeutic touch, etc.

7. Precept students(required participation), supervise students (optional participation)            

8. Maintain infection prevention protocols

9. Operate computers, fax, copier, scanner, printer, digital media devices

10. Collaborate with other Patient and Family Programs in CHAM for best patient experience. 

 

Must have a certification in child life or be eligible to sit for exam(degree completed, internship completed); must pass exam within one year and maintain certification throughout employment.  Master’s degree preferred, BS/BA, in child life, education, child development or related fields required.
