CLINICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN

Perform established departmental procedures of Anatomic Pathology in proper and accurate accessioning of surgical specimens received in Surgical Pathology into the Epic/ Beaker Laboratory information system, gross description and submission of uncomplicated tissue, assisting in intraoperative consultation (frozen section), daily maintenance of the Pathology cutting room, organizing and maintenance of all surgical specimen for storage, retrieval and disposal and daily filing specimen slides and blocks. Additional duties may include morgue duties such as accepting and releasing bodies, transporting amputation specimens from the morgue to the cutting room, organ evisceration and brain removal from autopsies.
Responsibilities:
- Accession surgical specimen in the LIS (EPIC/ Beaker)
- Organizing biopsy specimens to be gross and processed, prioritizing for various established Tissue processing programs
- Handling small fragments of tissue samples/ describing and properly submitting them in the appropriate cassette
- Preparing and cutting tissue samples for frozen sections at 5 μ (microns) in a cryostat
- Stain routine Hematoxylin/ eosin for frozen section diagnostic interpretation
- Perform order entry and update in the LIS (EPIC/Beaker)
- Daily maintenance and cleaning of the cutting room cutting stations and cryostats
- Perform all routine work, quality control to ensure high standards in the laboratory
- Process requests from pathology residents and Attending to ensure that work order is complete
- Receiving specimens from the operating room and/or endoscopy suite
- Organizing/ storage and retrieval of surgical specimens until discarding
- File paraffin blocks and slides
- Transport specimens and supplies from and to the morgue
- Proper disposal of tissue and chemical waste in the cutting room and histology
- Perform any other functions as departmental needs require
- Prioritize daily activity for order of importance (i.e., FS vs routine surgical specimens)
- Trouble shoot technical problems in frozen section staining procedures and equipment (Cryostat)
- Usage of following equipment: Cryo-rotary Microtome (Leica, Microm, Tissue-Tek), Laboratory Information System: EPIC/ Beaker, Scales (Electronic and Manual), Microwave, Graduate cylinder, Standard autopsy saw (Stryker autopsy saw), Bone saw (Cutting room), Surgical instruments (scissors, scalpel blades and handle, probes, forceps, etc.), Gross dissecting microscope, Cassette and slide labeling machine
Qualifications:
- Associate degree in Health Sciences or experience in Health care Environment with knowledge of Medical terminology and/or Histology/ Pathology lab preferred.
- Requires a New York State Clinical Laboratory Technician License and/ or Permit
This position is located at the Wakefield campus in the Rapid Response Lab. The hours are 9:00am – 5:00pm Monday – Friday with alternate weekends.
