DIRECTOR BIOETHICS
BRONX, NY, US
Montefiore Health System and Albert Einstein College of Medicine seek a dynamic and accomplished leader to serve as the next Director of the Montefiore Einstein Center for Bioethics and the Shoshanah Trachtenberg Frackman Chair in Biomedical Ethics. Montefiore is a premier academic medical center and the primary teaching hospital for Albert Einstein College of Medicine, a research-intensive medical school; both are located in the Bronx, New York City. Our joint mission is to heal, to teach, to discover and to advance the health of the vibrant, diverse communities we serve.
The next Director will build upon the significant strengths of the Center for Bioethics. The Bioethics Consultation service was initiated by Nancy Dubler, LLB, a founder of contemporary bioethics, in the 1970s; this service is one of the oldest and busiest in the nation. Our education programs include the Certificate Program in Bioethics and the Medical Humanities, which has trained several hundred professionals since its inception nearly thirty years ago. Educational programs were enhanced with the addition of the MS in Bioethics in 2010, in collaboration with Cardozo Law. All the education programs feature a unique approach, blending insights from the domains of clinical work, philosophy, narrative medicine, and the law. Our participants include both law and medical students, and established professionals who are clinicians, attorneys, scholars and advocates. Faculty of the Center are also active in bioethics education programs for medical students, residents, and other trainees at Montefiore and Einstein. Montefiore’s Bioethics Committee addresses both policy and clinical issues and is chaired by the Center Director. The Director will supervise the Center faculty, who are engaged, interdisciplinary professionals directing the educational programs, consultation service and bioethics research. The Director will teach within the graduate programs and will provide direct service some weeks each year on the consultation team.
The Director will be a recognized scholar in one or more domains within bioethics, including research ethics, clinical ethics, and/or ethics within public health policy. The Director reports to Montefiore’s Chief Medical Officer and Einstein’s Executive Dean, formalizing the Center’s mission to promote bioethics within both clinical and educational domains. The position is fully funded and full time, with benefits and a competitive salary commensurate with the candidate’s experience and qualifications.
Montefiore and Einstein seek to expand on the strengths of the Center for Bioethics. The successful candidate will demonstrate all or most of the following criteria:
- an advanced degree and/or combination of degrees, including MD, JD, PhD, Bioethics MS, advanced nursing degree or other degree relevant to bioethics
- national reputation in bioethics scholarship, policy and/or advocacy
- leadership experience in managing bioethics and other professionals
- demonstrated appreciation for the multi-disciplinary work necessary within bioethics
- expertise in designing, teaching, and supervising the creation of graduate level courses in bioethics
- competence in performing and supervising bioethics consultation, preferably in a high-volume service
- the ability to foster relationships among Center faculty, institutional leadership, internal and external colleauges, students, patients and families, and community members
- capacity to promote a work culture of respect, integrity, creativity and collegiality
- experience as a mentor for diverse colleagues, including Center faculty, peers, and students, so that they may integrate a deep appreciation of bioethics principles and processes into research and clinical work
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and expertise in public speaking
