NURSE PRACTITIONER

The Division of Neonatology, Weiler Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), is recruiting a full-time nurse practitioner to deliver specialized care to our high-risk infant patients. This candidate is expected to do procedures in the NICU on sick newborns, including intubation, lumbar puncture, and placement of peripherally inserted central lines.  The successful candidate will have the ability to assess, diagnose and carry out procedures while caring for our at-risk newborn patients. This candidate will have the ability to administer high-risk medications, will manage high-acuity patients requiring ventilator support and pre-operative and post-surgical care. This associate will have the ability to assist in resuscitation and other advanced interventions. In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for the provision, coordination, and assurance of comprehensive neonatal critical, intensive and continuing care for preterm and full term infants and pertinent standards of care, the diagnosis of illness and physical conditions, and performance of therapeutic, corrective, and prescriptive measures of the designated inpatient patient population as well as the provision of antenatal consultations and facilitating family engagement and shared decision making with the infant’s parent(s). There will be opportunity to participate or initiate in clinical and quality improvement research and development of clinical management guidelines. The coverage for the NICU would be for the flex position which includes both day and night shifts as needed for the coverage of the NICU.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team including the attending physician to develop and implement the therapeutic plan of care for a group of patients and ensure communication with family members.
  • Provide consultation about the therapeutic regimen to the nursing staff responsible for the patient's care in the hospital setting.
  • Facilitate the continuity of care across the continuum of services, e.g., home care, transfer to other facilities, post-discharge primary and specialty care appointments.
  • Participate in designated activities related to advanced practice professional standards and regulations of relevant outside agencies.
  • Perform complete health history, physical examination, and psychosocial assessment of patients within the designated practice or clinical unit.
  • Order customary laboratory, radiological and diagnostic studies per practice protocols, differentiates between normal/abnormal findings and follows protocols for abnormal findings, which may include referral to consulting physicians per customary pattern of the attending MD or with the collaborating physician.
  • Formulate the plan of care, along with the attending physician, patient, and family, based on expected goals of care and length of stay
  • Prescribe in-patient and discharge medications according to New York State law, including controlled substances with DEA authorization. Prescribes medical equipment, devices, physical and occupational therapy, and home health services per practice protocol.
  • Promotes own professional growth and development in clinical and managerial role.
  • Maintains current expertise in area of practice.
  • Serve as a clinical expert and resource for the education of peers and other health professionals.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • New York State License for a Nurse Practitioner and current registration or valid permit to practice in New York State as an NP
  • Drug Enforcement Authority (DEA) registration
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification

 

NP with neonatal experience preferred.

 

Education:

  • Master's Degree in Nursing; Board certification as a Nurse Practitioner
  • Competence: Relevant clinical nursing practice in the care of the patient population served; ability to apply nursing process toward achievement of specific outcomes in an organized fashion, which addresses patient/family safety and satisfaction. They must have excellent interpersonal skills, effective communication skills, creative problem solving and excellent critical thinking and leadership. Demonstrated ability to facilitate group processes and work cohesively and collaboratively as member of the interdisciplinary team. Must be able to perform procedures such as intubation, lumbar puncture, and intravenous and central line insertion.
