Montefiore Medical Center's Division of Clinical Pathology is responsible for the laboratory testing of blood, urine, and body fluids for disease diagnosis and health maintenance. Utilizing the latest advances in computer technology, the Division maintains millions of dollars of state-of-the-art automated equipment at its laboratory sites and services hospitals, nursing homes, the Montefiore Medical Group, faculty practices, and voluntary physicians' offices at more than 40 sites. 
The phlebotomist is responsible for performing and executing proper phlebotomy techniques in order to obtain patient blood samples via a needle stick. The individual is also responsible for reviewing laboratory requisitions and test orders for accuracy prior to performing phlebotomy.  He/she ensures proper and accurate specimen labeling and records collection and receipt of specimens in the laboratory system. The phlebotomist is responsible for centrifuging and preparing specimens for pick up and adhere to proper infection control practices and HIPAA policies and procedures.

 

Responsibilities: 
•    Perform phlebotomy techniques on adults, newborns, and pediatric patients using vacutainer needles, butterfly needles with adapters, and heel/finger-stick devices.
•    Record electrocardiograms on adults and pediatric patients.
•    Perform waived point-of care testing.
•    Obtain urine specimens from patients and handle appropriately prior to transporting to the lab.
•    Use the laboratory information systems in support of phlebotomy- related functions (ex: registering, ordering, printing, receiving, etc.).
•    Prepare specimens for delivery (ex: centrifugation, aliquoting, preparing paperwork, etc.).
•    Monitor and maintain quantity of supplies, maintain required logs and records.
•    Responsible for following Infectious Control procedures.
•    Receive daily work assignment and perform duties according to established standards.
•    Attend in-service sessions and staff meetings as required.
•    Comply with the requirements of regulatory agencies.
•    Follow established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, alert supervisor to defective equipment.
•    Perform other duties assigned as needed.

 

Qualifications:
•    High School / GED required, Hospital/phlebotomy school certificate or experience required
•    Phlebotomy techniques and procedures required. 
•    Knowledge of the principles and procedures of phlebotomy and ability to acquire appropriate and high-quality phlebotomy specimens
•    Knowledge of principles and procedures of EKG in acquiring high quality EKG data and point of care testing
•    Experience working with computers, label printers, office printers, scanners, fax machines, hand-held devices (such as smart phones and tablets) required 
•    Prior work experience with EKG machines, point of care testing equipment, temperature monitoring devices, refrigerators and freezers.

 

This position is located at the Moses campus in the Phlebotomy lab. The hours will be 6:00am - 9:00am Monday through Friday with alternate weekends.
