We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a full time Genetic Counselor in the Division of Reproductive and Medical Genetics in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women’s Health.

In this role under the direction of the Division Director and Senior Leadership, the successful candidate is responsible for review of family history, composition of pedigree, discussion of testing, and discussion of insurance verification of testing in conjunction with ethical, legal, and psychosocial aspects of testing.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Provides genetic counseling for patients and their families referred to the Division of Reproductive and Medical Genetics and/or Fetal Medicine High Risk Program at Montefiore Medical Center.
  • Provides tailored cancer risk assessment for the individual/family for hereditary predisposition to cancer.
  • Effectively counsels patients and their families. Interviews patients and their families to review the family history of cancer, provides individualized cancer risk assessment, and effectively provides individual and group counseling to patients and their families.
  • Reviews complex cases with the Medical Geneticist regarding patients referred for evaluation of hereditary cancer syndromes.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively as a member of the health care team and to take initiative and leadership as appropriate.
  • Effectively directs patients and their families to community agencies when appropriate. Seeks out community-based resources in order to better serve our patients.
  • Develops educational program and protocols for medical students and residents, genetics fellows and genetics counseling students. Takes an active role in educating all of the interdisciplinary team members regarding the role of genetics in providing services to our patients.
  • Provides genetics support to research studies as necessary. Effectively participates in educational activities, local and national and brings back knowledge learned to share with the division.
  • Participate in educational activities of the division, including training or medical students, resident, fellows, and genetic counselors.


Education/skills required:

  • Masters of Science Degree in Human Genetics coupled with Board certification by the American College of Genetic Counseling required.  Please note: The successful candidate must become certified within five years of date of graduation from Master’s program. He/she maintain certification during tenure. Incumbent must also re-certify every five years per ABGC policies and procedures.
