SENIOR PHLEBOTOMIST

The Senior Phlebotomist is responsible for the training the Phlebotomists, as well as clinical staff as required. In the absence of an immediate supervisor, the Senior Phlebotomist takes on a lead role and makes decisions to ensure workflow continuity. The individual is also responsible for daily location assignment of the phlebotomy staff.
Additionally, the Senior Phlebotomist is responsible for performing and executing proper phlebotomy techniques in order to obtain patient blood samples via a needle stick. The individual is also responsible for reviewing laboratory requisitions and test orders for accuracy prior to performing phlebotomy. He/she ensures proper and accurate specimen labeling and records collection and receipt of specimens in the laboratory system. The Senior Phlebotomist is responsible for centrifuging and preparing specimens for pick up. The individual must adhere to proper infection control practices and HIPAA policies and procedures.
Responsibilities:
• Performs phlebotomy techniques on adults, newborns, and pediatric patients using vacutainer needles, butterfly needles with adapters, and heel/finger-stick devices.
• Record electrocardiograms on adults and pediatric patients.
• Perform waived point-of care testing.
• Obtain urine specimens from patients and handle appropriately prior to transporting to the lab.
• Use the hospital information systems in support of phlebotomy-related functions (e.g. registering, ordering, printing, receiving, etc.)
• Prepare specimens for delivery (ex: centrifugation, aliquoting, preparing paperwork, etc.)
• Monitor and maintain quantity of supplies.
• Responsible for following Infectious Control procedures.
• Receive daily work assignment from superior and perform duties according to established standards.
• Maintain required logs and records.
• Attend in-service sessions and staff meetings as required.
• Comply with the requirements of regulatory agencies.
• Follow established hospital and department policies and procedures.
• Alert supervisor to defective equipment.
• Train others in phlebotomy techniques when required and assist in the orientation of new associates, students, clinical staff, etc.
• Act as a lead phlebotomist in the absence of the supervisor and as directed by the supervisor. Perform duties as assigned by the supervisor
• Create daily location work assignments for the phlebotomy staff.
• Perform other duties assigned as needed.
Qualifications:
• High School Diploma/GED required
• A minimum of 1 year of work experience
• Phlebotomy certified with 100 successful veni-puncture on adults and 25 infant heel/finger sticks. Light computer skills required
• Knowledge of the principles and procedures of phlebotomy and ability to acquire appropriate and high-quality phlebotomy specimens
• Knowledge of the principles and procedures of EKG and ability to acquire high quality EKG data
• Knowledge of proper capillary equipment usage for collection of specimens on infants and children
• Knowledge of proper venous equipment usage for collection of specimens on infants and children
This position is located at the Einstein campus in the Rapid Response Lab. The hours are Mondays, Tuesdays & Wednesdays 3:00 am – 6:00 am and alternate weekends 3:00 am - 11:00 am.
