SPECIALTY LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST

The Sleep Technician will carry out all technical duties for the sleep disorder laboratory under the supervision of the medical director and/or administrator to provide comprehensive evaluation of sleep disorders. This may involve polysomnography (including in-lab and home sleep study), diagnostic and therapeutic services or patient care, coordination of home care services and education. The Sleep Technician will perform duties defined for a polysomnographyic technician and may provide oversight to other staff. Also, they will effectively troubleshoot difficult problems and demonstrate the ability to use critical thinking skills for problem solving. Associate may be required to work at multiple locations.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepares & calibrates equipment for testing to determine proper functioning & adjusts as necessary. This includes applying electrodes, & sensors, including performing appropriate physiologic calibrations (when age & cognitive function appropriate) to ensure proper signals & make adjustments if necessary.
  • Documents routine observations, changes in procedure & significant events to facilitate scoring & interpretation of polysomnographic results. Provides thorough documentation during data collection based on direct observation of the patient through technologist's notes. Follows "lights out" procedures to establish & document baseline values (such as body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, end tidal carbon dioxide values, respiratory & heart rates, etc.)
  • Monitors study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free & adjust, if necessary. Troubleshoot equipment. Follows procedural protocols (such as PAP titration, PH probes, actigraphy, oxygen titration, research protocols, etc.) to ensure appropriate data collection.
  • Implement appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety & therapeutic interventions such as continuous & bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.).
  • Performs different & unusual procedures & therapeutic interventions as indicated based on information collected during the study.
  • Clean & sterilize all equipment.
  • Complete appropriate paperwork for documentation & billing.
  • Maintain inventory.
  • Score sleep study records according to the standard scoring rules.

 

This is a part time night shift - 2 shifts per week 7:30pm- 9am

 

REQUIREMENTS:

• High School Diploma/GED required, Associate's Degree preferred

• NY State License or work permit as polysomnographer

• Minimum 6 months work experience preferred.

• Maintain CPR/BCLS certification 

• Board Certification of Polysomnographer (RPSGT), or obtain within 1 year of hire.

• Knowledge of home sleep study devices and polysomnography machine in conjunction with EEG, EOG, EKG, motion sensors, respiration monitors & other physiological activities, & continuous/bi-level positive airway therapy equipment.

• Evening & night shift employees work alone with patients.
