SURGICAL PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT- CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE

Montefiore seeks a board eligible/board certified Physician Assistant for the Division of Critical Care Medicine. The PA works in collaboration with physicians, nurses and administrative staff to provide comprehensive health care, and plan of care within a fully integrated service responsible for 24/7 coverage of adult medical, surgical, cardiothoracic, and neuroscience ICUs at our Moses and Weiler campuses. 

 

The practice of a physician assistant shall include medical services within the education, training and experience of the physician assistant that are delegated by the supervising physician.

 

Medical services rendered by physician assistants may include, but are not limited to, obtaining patient histories and performing physical examinations; ordering and/or performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; formulating a diagnosis; developing and implementing a treatment plan; monitoring the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions; offering counseling and education to meet patient needs; making appropriate referrals. Physician Assistants, in an emergency, shall be authorized to treat any medical disease and/or perform any medical and surgical procedures at

the hospital for affiliates. An emergency, for these purposes, is defined as a situation in which any delay in administering treatment would result in serious harm to the patient or an immediate threat to life of the patient and that a qualified practitioner is not immediately available.

 

Additional responsibilities include: Arterial catheter insertion/removal; Central venous catheter insertion/removal; Temporary hemodialysis catheter insertion/removal; Pulmonary artery catheter insertion/removal; Midline catheter insertion/removal; Thoracentesis; Endotracheal intubation; Chest tube insertion/removal; Intra-aortic balloon pump removal; Arterial sheath removal; lntraosseous catheter insertion/removal; Interpretation of pulmonary artery catheter tracings; Management of patients with ventricular assist devices; Management of patients with extra- corporeal membrane oxygenation circuits

 

The activities listed above may be performed in any setting authorized by the supervising physician, including but not limited to, clinics, hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, patient homes, nursing homes and other institution settings.

 

In addition to the core skills listed here, PAs, will request validation to perform department specific skills.

 

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree Required
  • Graduate of an accredited Physician’s Assistant program.
  • Registered as a Physician’s Assistant in New York State
  • NCCPA certified
  • Completion of an accredited Critical Care Physician Assistant certification program or 1-2 years of surgery, medicine, or emergency medicine preferred. 
  • Schedule: 50/50 days and nights; Rotating weekends
