SURGICAL PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT

The practice of a Physician Assistant shall include medical services within the education, training & experience of the PA that are delegated by the supervising physician. Medical services rendered may include but are not limited to obtaining patient histories & performing physical examinations; ordering &/or performing diagnostic & therapeutic procedures; formulating a diagnosis; developing & implementing a treatment plan; monitoring the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions; assisting in surgical procedures; offering counseling & education to meet patient needs; making appropriate referrals.
The Surgical Physician Assistant, in an emergency, shall be authorized to treat any medical disease &/or perform any medical & surgical procedures at the hospital for affiliates. An emergency, for these purposed, is defined as a situation in which any delay in administering treatment would result in serious harm to the patient or an immediate threat to life of the patient & that a qualified practitioner is not immediately available.
The activities listed above may be performed in any setting authorized by the supervising physician, including but not limited to, clinics, hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, & other institution settings.
In addition to the Core Skills listed here, Surgical PA’s will request validation to perform department specific skills.
The hours for this position may vary - 8am – 4:30pm or 8:30am – 5pm
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Prescribes medications for the patient.
Communicates effectively with members of the health care team & the patient & involved others.
Participates in a team approach to health care, acts as a liaison between members of the primary care team;
Performs emergency, lifesaving procedures in the presence of life-threatening situations such as: cardiac arrest, massive hemorrhage or similar problems. Technical skills include but are not limited to, providing basic life support & advanced life support.
In collaboration with the Attending Physician / health care providers, the PA will coordinate the care of the patient.
Performs procedures that may include insertion & removal of arterial lines, central lines, chest tubes, nasogastric tubes, Swann-Ganz catheters, intra-aortic balloons, temporary pacemaker wires, renal dialysis catheters, thoracentesis, paracentesis, arthrocentesis & lumbar puncture. In addition, performs venipuncture & arteriopuncture.
May assist the Orthopaedic Surgeons in the OR, for both inpatient & ambulatory cases.
Performs other duties, as necessary.
REQUIREMENTS:
Master's Degree from an accredited Physician’s Assistant program.
Registered as a Physician’s Assistant in New York State.
NCCPA certified.
Automated medical information systems
Must demonstrate the ability to administer medications to meet age & weight criteria of patient for pediatrics, adult, & geriatric age groups.
Demonstrates knowledge of physiological & psychological patient differences in age-related groups
