SURGICAL PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT

The practice of a Physician Assistant in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women’s Health shall include medical services within the education, training and experience of the physician assistant that are delegated by the supervising physician.
Medical services rendered by physician assistants may include, but are not limited to:
- Obtaining patient histories and performing physical examinations
- Ordering and/or performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
- Formulating a diagnosis; developing and implementing a treatment plan
- Monitoring the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions; assisting at surgery; offering counseling and education to meet patient needs; making appropriate referrals
- Physician Assistants, in an emergency, shall be authorized to treat any medical disease and/or perform any medical and surgical procedures at the hospital for affiliates. An emergency, for these purposed, is defined as a situation in which any delay in administering treatment would result in serious harm to the patient or an immediate threat to life of the patient and that a qualified practitioner is not immediately available.
The activities listed above may be performed in any setting authorized by the supervising physician, including but not limited to, clinics, hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, patient homes, nursing homes and other institution settings.
Education/skills required:
- Bachelor’s degree and Graduate of an accredited PA program
- Certified by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
- Physician Assistant License by New York State
- Emergency Neurological Life Support (ENLS) certified (Level I) preferred
